There were half a dozen or so pavillions like this one scattered throughout the garden. Each one was slightly different and all were apparently meant to be "retreats" in which to meditate or read or escape the summer heat (and believe me, it needs escaping...). They were all quite ornate inside and usually had a wrap-around porch with seating along the edge and the typical swooping, peaked roof you'd expect in Chinese architechture.
